*Senior Accountant starting compensation is negotiable based on education, knowledge, and experience up to $80,000.00 annual.
General Description:
Under general supervision, the Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining accounting records for specific funds according to general acceptable accounting principles.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, OR bachelor's degree in business administration or finance with an accounting minor, AND
- Four (4) years of experience in accounting or auditing, preferably in governmental accounting or governmental auditing. A master’s degree in accounting or MBA, CPA, or CGFO certificate may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
- A comparable amount of education, training, and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains the accounting records of specific funds of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office according to generally accepted accounting principles.
- Assists with accounts receivable processing of invoicing, receipts, and refunds.
- Prepares journal entries to the General Ledger from supporting records.
- Assists with accounts payable processing to ensure proper requisitions are set up and appropriately handled so payments can be processed in a timely manner for agreements, contracts, and other required transactions.
- Responsible for the review and analysis of daily bank activity.
- Performs quarterly cash audits.
- Prepares a variety of financial reports.
- Performs various operating and/or cost accounting analysis, which requires the application of generally accepted accounting principles to a wide var of difficult problems.
- Uses professional judgement to ensure prescribed compliance with procedures.
- Makes day-to-day decisions concerning the treatment of financial transactions.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions:
- General office setting with most duties being performed while sitting at a desk, table, or workstation.
- Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

- Ability to make day-to-day decisions concerning the treatment of financial transactions.
- Ability to establish and maintain efficient records.
- Ability to prepare complete accounting reports and statements of moderate complexity.
- Ability to adopt and revise accounting systems to meet the needs of an accounting activity.

- Ability to interact effectively with others.
Required Knowledge:
- VSO General Orders and procedures.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures, particularly as they relate to governmental financial administration, and ability to apply such knowledge to accounting transactions.
- Knowledge of computers, spreadsheets, and other financial software.
- Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations controlling fiscal record keeping.
- Knowledge of auditing accounting records.
- Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.)
- VSO Organizational structure and locations.
- All activities related to learned area(s) of concentration.
