Job Description

The University of Virginia is recruiting for a Director of Property & Liability Risk Management to join the Office of the Treasurer. The Office of the Treasurer is the steward of the University’s financial resources, practicing sound financial management in support of academic and healthcare excellence. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Finance, the Treasurer’s Office ensures the sustainability of the University’s mission and goals through treasury management, and insurable risk management.

The Director of Property & Liability Risk Management (DPLRM) provides leadership and direction for the University’s property and liability risk management strategy. The DPLRM is responsible for establishing and maintaining an insurance strategy through programs of self-insurance, commercial and state sponsored coverages. The DPLRM oversees the University’s risk management department, budget, and policies to reduce the University’s total cost of insurable risk. The DPLRM and their team works to identify areas of risk and potential liability; and develop risk response strategies to mitigate loss and maximize opportunities. Our vision is to promote a culture of risk awareness by involving University stakeholders in the day-to-day management of insurable risks as well as loss prevention best practices.

Key offices the DPLRM partners with include Facilities Management, UVA Medical Center, International Studies Office, Environmental Health and Safety, Office of Safety and Security, and Emergency Management.

Typical Work:

  • The DPLRM will have overall responsibility for managing property and liability risk financing arrangements (insurance & self-insurance) for the University. This will involve coordinating a comprehensive insurance program for the University, its Medical Center, and the College at Wise.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements controls and cost-effective approaches to minimize the organization's property & liability risk effects.
  • The DPLRM will work in coordination with other University departments to promote loss prevention measures. This involves maintaining an effective, cooperative, and service-focused relationship with departments in the University.
  • Ensures the organization's risk management policies and strategies are in compliance with applicable regulations, rating agency standards, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and strategic imperatives of the organization.
  • Provides direction and leadership to the Property & Liability Risk Management team.
  • Review contractual agreements on behalf of the University and provide advice on property and liability insurance requirements and risk concerns.
  • Maintains professional contacts with other universities, research entities, equipment manufacturers, insurance brokers, UVA Foundations, and professional organizations.
  • Stays abreast of the related policies and procedures of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Division of Risk Management.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 7 years' experience in Risk Management and Insurance.
  • Experience with multiple types of insurance coverages, including but not limited to builder’s risk, OPPI, cyber risk, Crime, SCR, and Medical Malpractice.
  • Proactive identification of risks and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Active in Risk Management Professional Organizations – staying apprised of current issues and new developments in the industry.
  • Proficiencies in community engagement around risk management issues/topics.

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Advanced Degree in higher education, business, risk management, or related field.
  • 10+ years of Risk Management or Insurance related experience.
  • 3 years in higher education.
  • 3 years in municipal or state government or a State Agency.
  • Experience with medical malpractice insurance required.

Licensure/Certifications:

  • ARM (Associate in Risk Management)

  • Ability to assess property & liability risks for the University and implement the appropriate risk management strategies to mitigate losses.
  • Ability to interpret insurance coverages and administer insurance related claims.
  • Proven history of planning and directing the technological components, budgetary aspects, and overall administration of a Risk Management Department.
  • Ability to manage overlapping priorities and provide services on a timely basis; needs to have a strong service orientation.
  • Ability to understand and manage the full range of risk management responsibilities: risk financing (insurance & self-insurance), loss prevention, and claims management.
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to interact with people within all levels of the University’s decentralized environment.
  • Deep knowledge of policies and laws, Including state property and liability programs.
  • Experience with self-insurance programs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

  • 7 years' experience in Risk Management, Finance, Audit or Insurance related field. Experience with medical malpractice insurance.

Licensure:

  • ARM (Associate in Risk Management)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
