Want to Claim IRA Elective Pay for 2023 Projects?
Have you completed clean energy projects (e.g., purchased EVs, installed EV charging stations or solar) in 2023 and are thinking of claiming the elective pay credits under the Inflation Reduction Act? As a refresher, for completed eligible projects, entities must complete the pre-filing registration process to obtain a registration number for each project before filing your tax returns for the credit(s). Since many entities who completed projects in 2023 are quickly approaching the first deadline for filing annual returns to claim the credit, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is currently strongly urging state and local governments to complete the pre-filing registration process now if they plan to claim elective pay for 2023 projects. It may take a significant amount of time for the IRS to review documents, and they recommend pre-filling registration be completed 120 days prior to when an entity plans to file its tax return on which it will make its election. IRS is offering office hours that you can register to participate to ask questions on elective pay and the pre-filling registration process. You must register to attend, click on the following dates for more information: September 18, 2024 and October 2, 2024. Click here for GFOA’s IRA Implementation Resources.
