The association’s over 20,000 members in the United States and Canada rely upon GFOA to provide timely information, practical educational opportunities, high quality professional publications, and the latest information on best practices.

Position Summary

GFOA seeks a creative and experienced education professional to help drive its mission to advance excellence in government finance through the design and delivery of professional development to our members. This senior level position, which is new for the organization, will report directly to the CEO/Executive Director and will be a member of the leadership team. Currently GFOA has a vast and well established training program for its members. This position will provide strategic leadership to enhance current offerings as well to expand the training program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, design and implement new educational offerings and enhance the content and delivery of current offerings.
  • Continually assess training needs of members and prospective members (public finance professionals).
  • Apply instructional design theory and best practice methods including adult learning theory, instruction-led and e-learning theory to deliverables.
  • Develop content and delivery standards for staff and volunteer trainers to ensure high quality member experience.
  • Manage Continuing Professional Education (CPE) process to ensuring training meets CPE standards.
  • Develop and oversee program budget.
  • Key role in selecting and organizing GFOA’s annual conference training session, ensuring that sessions meet members’ needs.
  • Manage relations with various teams, external trainers and vendors for creation and delivery of educational content.
  • Manage Learning Management System “LMS”
  • Develop and implement three to five year continuing education business plan. This includes webinars, annual conference, classroom based training, seminars, workshops and online courses/initiatives.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, business, instructional design or similar discipline. Advanced degree preferred. Formal training in curriculum and instruction preferred.
  • At least 5-7 years of progressive experience in adult education, training or professional development. Experience in an association environment preferred.
  • At least 3-5 years management experience.
  • High level of expertise with learning management systems and training technology.
  • Experience working with and coordinating multiple volunteers, subject matter experts and other key stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, oral presentation skills
