A Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grants Program under the IIJA was announced on September 19. The purpose of the program “is to conduct demonstration projects focused on advanced smart city or community technologies and systems in a variety of communities to improve transportation efficiency and safety” (p. 2).
The program includes $500,000,000 in advanced appropriations, including $100,000,000 for FY 2022. “Successful projects will seek to build sustainable partnerships across sectors and levels of government as well as collaborate with industry, academia, nonprofits, and other traditional and non-traditional partners” (p. 4).
Eligible entities include states, political subdivisions of a state, federally recognized Tribal governments, public transit agencies or authorities, public toll authorities, metropolitan planning organizations, or a group of these eligible entities.
