GFOA Scholarship Spotlight: Mariana O'Neill

Mariana received the $8,000 Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship.

Mariana O'Neill has been employed with state and local agencies for most of her career. She works as chief financial officer for Teton County Fire Protection District in Teton Valley, Idaho. At work, she is known for her integrity, creativity, and dedication to achieving results. Her ability to problem-solve and think outside the box has been invaluable in the position. Currently, she is finishing her third year of studies at the University of Wyoming, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. When not working or volunteering, she enjoys spending time outdoors and traveling with her family. Originally from Moldova, she returns regularly to where she was born to visit, spend time with family, and give back to the community.

Q & A with Mariana

Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?

I am currently studying Accounting at the University of Wyoming. I have always been passionate about numbers and problem solving, and accounting offers both.

What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?

I work for the local Fire District as the chief financial officer. I'm able to do what I love while giving back to the community, and working with an amazing group of people.

What are your future career goals?

My future career goals once I graduate are to become a CPA and CPFO. I would like to stay involved with local government and continue my career growth.

How will GFOA’s scholarship help you achieve those goals?

I was awarded the Jeffrey Esser Career Development Scholarship.  The scholarship will allow me to achieve my goals without the added burden of financial aid.
