Q & A with Sharon

Where and what are you currently studying?

I am attending Grand Canyon University to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Accounting Degree.

Why did you choose this?

I have always loved math since I was a child.  I worked in a CPA firm for over seventeen years where I assisted with many accounting duties.  As I grew in knowledge of the skills needed, I quickly realized how much I enjoyed Accounting.  It’s not just “numbers” to me, it’s almost like putting a puzzle together. 

What government are you working or hoping to work at in the future?

I am currently a financial analyst with the City of Myrtle Beach.

What are your future career goals?

I plan to graduate with my BS in August 2023.  I love my job and where I work, so I plan to stay with the City of Myrtle Beach and hope to advance in our FMR department in the future.

Which GFOA scholarship did you receive this year, and how will GFOA’s scholarship help you achieve these goals?

I am honored to be one of the recipients of the Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship.  By receiving this scholarship, I will be able to finish my BS degree without taking out any additional student loans.  I am very thankful for this opportunity.
