Position Summary

This is specialized accounting work involving city wide financial operations. These responsibilities include payroll, accounts payable, vendor file maintenance, travel authorizations and journal entries to the general ledger.  This includes preparation of various internal and external financial  reports and documents as needed.  Work is performed in accordance with general instructions following accepted general accounting procedures, applicable laws and City policies under the supervision of the Accounting Manager.  Work is reviewed upon completion and requires a high level of accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Works with the senior payroll specialist to process payroll for all employee earnings based on submitted hours balanced by departments and process the bi-weekly payroll interface to the general ledger.
  • Ensures payroll process conforms to City policies and procedures as well as all State and Federal laws and regulations.  
  • Processes payroll benefit payments to outside agencies such as KPERS.  Ensures everything is accurate and completed in a timely manner.
  • Process monthly pension payroll for the city’s defined benefit pension plan.  Ensures payroll process conforms to City policies and procedures as well as all State and Federal laws and regulations.  At year end, reconcile 1099R’s and process other necessary year-end reports.
  • Assists with reviewing and processing accounts payable invoices, and processing payments.
  • Maintain vendor file including establishing new accounts, auditing for duplicate vendors, requesting and obtaining W-9 forms and setting up direct deposit payments.  
  • Provide customer service to outside vendors and internal departments in regards to payment and invoice processing.
  • Review travel authorizations for accuracy and conformance to city policies and procedures. 
  • Assist with purchase card coding and training new employees on purchasing and purchasing card policies and procedures.
  • Post all payment transactions to financial system.  Prepares journal entries and reconciles account balances with appropriate records. 
  • Trained as backup support for other Finance positions
  • Assist in the preparation of audit schedules and annual ACFR


Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with previous internships or accounting clerk experience, or an associate’s degree in accounting or finance and three years’ of increasingly responsible accounting experience, including general accounting, accounts payable and governmental accounting, or any combination of education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Desired: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with previous governmental accounting experience with a growth mindset.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hiring range is from $22.33 to $27.17 per hour dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
