Assistant Finance Director
GENERAL PURPOSE
The Assistant Finance Director is responsible for supporting the management and oversight of the municipality’s financial operations. Under the direction of the Finance Director, the Assistant Finance Director ensures the effective implementation and maintenance of financial systems, budgets, financial reports, tax audits, and compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations. This position plays a crucial role in assisting with strategic financial planning, managing day-to-day finance functions, and ensuring the municipality's fiscal health.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direction of the Finance Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises direct supervision over Budget & Tax Manager and Senior Procurement Agent. Indirectly exercises supervision to staff within these divisions through division managers.
THE QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL
- Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.
- Assist in the preparation and administration of the city’s budget, including working with various departments to ensure budget compliance.
- Support the Finance Director in developing long-term financial planning strategies and multi-year budget forecasts.
- Help manage the municipality’s cash flow, including investment planning and debt management.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to Leadership Team and City Council on various financial matters and capital projects.
TEAM LEADERSHIP & SUPERVISION
- Supervise, train, and mentor finance department staff, ensuring professional development and high-quality performance.
- Assist in developing departmental goals and objectives, and track progress against targets.
- Coordinate the workflow of the department to ensure timely and accurate completion of tasks.
SALES & USE TAX
- Oversee the collection and reporting of city sales tax, ensuring timely and accurate remittance from businesses.
- Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal laws, rules and regulations.
- Oversee sales tax audit and building use tax reconciliation processes.
- Procurement & Contracting
- Oversee the Procurement & Contracting processes for the city.
- Ensure policies and procedures are kept current and adhere with municipal best practices as well as local, state, and federal laws.
OTHER
- Acts as Director in the absence of the Finance Director.
- Assists the Finance Director with special projects and other financial tasks as assigned.
- Participates in a variety of professional and public meetings and activities; represents the city as community meetings and organizations; represents the city in partnerships with other public sector agencies; attends staff meetings; participates in required training and strategic planning activities.
We are seeking the following qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field. A master’s degree or CPA certification preferred; and
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal finance or accounting, including experience in budgeting, financial reporting, and supervision.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in financial software (e.g., ERP systems, Excel, etc.) and government accounting standards.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact with elected officials, staff, and the public.

Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.
