Are you a high-energy and results-focused accounting professional looking to serve the community by leading the financial reporting team of Virginia’s second largest city?

The City of Chesapeake seeks an experienced professional to serve as Assistant Finance Director/Controller. This position works closely with the Deputy Finance Director, CFO and Assistant Finance Director Debt & Strategic Planning to provide financial services to the city government.

The Assistant Finance Director/Controller will join a talented and experienced finance staff in a City with a reputation for being stable and well-managed. This position is open because the previous incumbent was promoted to CFO. Reporting directly to the Deputy Finance Director, the Assistant Finance Director/Controller leads a team of 7 accountants.

If the selected candidate does not have governmental accounting experience, training will be provided via internal and external coaching and training programs.

With the hiring of the new CFO, the team is building on past successes with a renewed focus on customer service, communication, staff development, and looking at new ways to support our user departments. This is an exciting time to join the team!

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • A minimum of six years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred. CPA, CPFO, CGFM, or similar credential preferred.

Hiring salary $110K to $135K DOQ/E.
