Job Description

The Fairfax County Internal Audit Office has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual who would like to make an impact on local government operations by filling a Business Process Auditor position. This is your chance to join a well-functioning team that works to ensure good stewardship of public resources.

This is an entry-level auditor position that performs cycle audits of county agencies in the areas of procurement, accounting, finance, and human resources. The audits are performed to verify compliance with established policy and the effectiveness of internal controls systems in place. The successful candidate will utilize a standard audit process and program to perform audits. Responsibilities include handling all parts of these business process internal audits in compliance with Government Auditing Standards.

The successful candidate must have the ability to build strong working relationships to work with auditees during the audit and follow up on prior audit findings. They will need excellent communications skills to provide management with recommendations for improvement - both orally and in writing and to successfully bring about positive changes. Additionally, they should have some knowledge of auditing processes, accounting methods and controls, procurement practices, human resources areas, and the ability to work with a variety of software applications.

In this position, an individual will build upon their knowledge of internal audit standards, procedures, and techniques; management principles, methods, and practices; accounting methods, principles, and practices, along with knowledge of the fundamentals of economics, finance and information systems. Duties are performed under general supervision.

This position is eligible for scheduled telework as permissible by the county telework policy which allows for a hybrid environment of in office and telework days.

Note: The salary offer will not exceed the midpoint (or $89,901.76 annual) of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Participates in developing a work plan for assigned audits or audit segments;
  • Participates in identifying key controls and in determining audit procedures to be used;
  • Reviews transactions, documents, records, and reports for accuracy and effectiveness;
  • Evaluates the adequacy of internal controls and procedures;
  • Prepares work papers and written summaries of findings and recommendations;
  • Conducts preliminary discussions of findings with agency personnel;
  • Performs follow-up audits of department action plans.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of internal audit standards, procedures, techniques, and internal control;
  • Knowledge of fundamentals of accounting, economics, and finance;
  • Knowledge of office procedures;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established deadlines;
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate fiscal and accounting data and procedures, and makes recommendations;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to use personal computers and common soft ware, i.e., word processing, spreadsheet and flowcharts.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field, with major course work in accounting, auditing, or finance; plus two years of professional experience in auditing or accounting.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and credit check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience performing accounting, operational, financial or program internal controls reviews/and or internal audit.
  • At least one year of local or federal government auditing/accounting experience.
  • Proficiency utilizing software applications to perform data analytics.
  • Proficiency with Electronic workpapers/Automated workflow systems.
  • At least intermediate proficiency utilizing Microsoft Excel.
  • CPA, CIA, CISA, CGAP, CRMA, or CCSA certification, a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing/delivering presentations and reports, writing official correspondence/memoranda, and leading and/or facilitating meetings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Position is basically sedentary, but requires some walking, standing & carrying items up to 40lbs in weight. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
