Controller
The City of Avondale has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional to fill the position of Controller. The Controller reports to the Assistant Director of Finance and Budget. The primary function of this position is leading, managing, and coordinating a variety of complex and technically challenging financial processes and reports. The person in this role will work to help accelerate needed improvements to processes and systems.
The ideal candidate for this position will be an independent self-starter with a strong commitment to personal and professional integrity. They will oversee a wide array of accounting functions, including financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, debt management, utility billing, and treasury operations. This role will ensure that all required transactions and reports are completed accurately and on time, while also analyzing current processes to identify and implement improvements. Collaboration with finance staff and stakeholders from other departments will be key to understanding and enhancing processes and systems in line with generally accepted accounting principles and best practices.
The successful candidate will support and empower the Finance and Budget Department team, promoting exceptional customer service, efficient financial transaction processing, and professional growth. Familiarity with current and emerging technologies and best practices in local government finance is essential. The candidate will possess strong interpersonal and technical skills, be recognized as a team player, and demonstrate respect and positivity while working with diverse groups. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to possessing the ability to live out our core and functional values daily, candidates must possess the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) along with laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to local government accounting and finance.
- Seven (7) years of experience in government finance, accounting, financial statement preparation, or related field.
- Three (3) years of experience supervising finance and/or accounting professionals.
- Experience with a municipal government and experience preparing or directing the preparation of an Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) is preferred.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Active designation as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- Valid Arizona Driver's License.
