We’re looking for a Finance Director to join our team at Larimer County. This is your chance to make a meaningful impact on our community’s financial health while leading a dedicated and committed team!

The Finance Director will assume the critical role of Chief Financial Officer, overseeing all aspects of the County’s financial operations. This position is responsible for managing key departments, including accounting, purchasing, and risk management, as well as handling essential tasks such as debt financing and sales tax.

As the primary financial advisor to the Board of County Commissioners, Elected Officials, the County Manager, and other department leaders, the Finance Director's expertise will be instrumental in shaping our County’s financial strategy and ensuring efficient operations.

The ideal candidate must embody integrity and value teamwork. They should be a thoughtful coach and mentor, fostering a culture that encourages the training and development of the overall team. As a department leader, they must be confident and fair in their decisions, provide clear direction, and proactively solicit feedback and new ideas. Adept at developing relationships, the next Finance Director must demonstrate an ability to influence others through well-reasoned explanations and clear communication, and they must be an exceptional presenter. They should be personable, approachable, collaborative, team-oriented, and solution-focused.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specifically, this position:

  • Supervises and manages Finance department staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and scheduling.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Develops strategic goals, policies, and internal controls to enhance departmental performance.
  • Administers and reviews the Finance Department's budget and expenditures.
  • Optimizes financial processes to support County departments and mitigate financial risks.
  • Manages contracts for department services and debt issuance.
  • Prepares policies and procedures necessary for successful financial system operations.
  • Leads internal issue resolution and strategic direction as part of the Support Services leadership team.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A CANDIDATE WHO WILL:

  • Know general office practices and financial systems, including GAAP, GASB, and fund accounting.
  • Demonstrate expertise in best practices in governmental accounting, risk management, and compliance.
  • Exhibit strong leadership and management skills, including supervision and mentorship.
  • Be proficient in financial software systems and business applications.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Analyze complex financial data and make strategic recommendations.

QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Eight (8) years experience in governmental accounting and finance including debt administration, purchasing, and risk management, including at least five (5) years in a supervisory capacity, required.
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent education, from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Accounting, Finance, Public or Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • CPA or equivalent license preferred.
  • Maintain continuing education hours annually or as required.
