The City of Murfreesboro, Tennessee (pop. 130,131) is seeking an innovative Director of Finance. This position is currently open due to the retirement of the previous Director of Finance who served the City for over 28 years.
Murfreesboro is located at the geographic center of Tennessee, approximately 35 miles southeast of Nashville. The City serves as a regional center for retail, medical services, and tourism and boasts a diverse economic and employment base.
The Director of Finance is responsible for the financial management of the City and reports to the Mayor, City Council and the City Manager. The Director’s responsibilities include accounting, financial reporting, and investing of City funds. Other responsibilities include reporting on performance measures, producing the City’s budget document, monthly and quarterly financial monitoring and reporting, fiscal forecasting and planning, and financial and policy analysis. The City has a 2021 annual budget of $644 million, and a General Fund budget of $183.1 million. The City employs 987 full-time and 400 part-time employees.
The Director of Finance position requires a Bachelor’s degree; qualified candidates must possess the designation of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and be licensed to practice in the State of Tennessee. Qualified candidates will be designated as a Certified Municipal Finance Officer (CMFO) by the State of Tennessee or able to obtain certification within two (2) years of employment or meet exemption requirements. Candidates must have the ability to become certified as a City Recorder by the State of Tennessee.
The salary range for this position is $116,594 - $169,061 depending on qualifications and experience. The City also provides a competitive benefits package including participation in a 401(a) and 457 plan. The City matches up to 3% of the 401(a) plan and will match up to 5% of the 457 plan.
