Salary: $132,000 - $160,000 Annually

Come join the beautiful City of Sausalito as our first Risk Manager. Under general direction from the Finance Director, the Risk Manager plans, organizes, conducts, and directs the City's risk management programs. This position will oversee key areas such as insurance, claims administration, protection against damage to City property, loss control, contract insurance, indemnification, budget preparation, and may be involved in the oversight of workers' compensation and employee safety.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will:

  • Possess experience in municipal, state, and federal laws, regulations, and court decisions affecting municipal liabilities and exposures.
  • Understand contract law relative to public and general liability, personal injury, and claims adjustments.
  • Be knowledgeable in Insurance company policies and procedures regarding claims and reserves.
  • Be skilled in principles and practices of management, including programming, budgeting, and supervision.
  • Be able to Interpret and communicate risk management and loss control programs to employees and the public.
  • Be well organized in their work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective, tactful, and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including various cultural and ethnic groups.
  • Foster and contribute to a work environment that supports and exhibits honesty, diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, public administration, insurance or financial management or related field.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible, professional level experience in risk management. Experience in a public agency is desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • The ability to convey oneself to and from geographical locations frequently and timely, or possession of a valid CA driver’s license.
  • Designation as an Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Asso¬ciate in Risk Management for Public Entities (ARM-P) or an equivalent is desirable.

BENEFITS OVERVIEW:

The City offers a healthy cafeteria benefits program including choices among plan options for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long-term disability, and PERS long-term care insurance.

  • Retirement: The City is a part of the CalPERS retirement plan and does not contribute to Social Security.
  • Classic employees – 2% @55 formula, highest 3-year average compensation.
  • PEPRA employees – hired after 1/1/13 or Classic employee with 6-month break in service are eligible for a 2% @ 62 formula, highest 3-year average compensation.
  • Deferred Compensation: The City offers an optional 457 plan. Employees who actively participate receive a contribution by the City of 1% of their base pay on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Employee Development: $2,000 annual reimbursement for educational programs of which $1000 may be used for approved wellness expenditures.
  • Holidays: 11 authorized holidays per year.
  • Administrative Leave: 80 hours of administrative leave per calendar year.
  • Vacation: Employees earn 136 hours of vacation and 96 hours of sick leave per year.
