Emma Brandt has served as assistant finance officer for Lapeer County Health Department in Lapeer, Michigan, since April 2020. Previously, Emma served as deputy records clerk for the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office. Emma holds a BA degree in Business Administration from Baker College in Auburn Hills. Emma is seeking an MBA with an Accounting emphasis from the University of Southern Indiana and will graduate in June 2021. Emma has volunteered as a coordinator for the Sheriff’s Office Victim Service Unit since July 2019. This unit responds to families that have lost a loved one to an unexpected death in Lapeer County. Emma’s future career goal is to become a chief financial officer of a Michigan county.

Q & A with Emma

Where and what are you currently studying? Why did you choose this?

I am studying business administration with a concentration in accounting at the University of Southern Indiana. I chose this field when I was a freshman in high school after my first finance class. I am passionate about accounting and management. 

What Government are you working or hoping to work at in the future?

I started working for the County of Lapeer in 2018. I have worked for the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office and Health Department. I just recently accepted the Finance Director position at the Lapeer County Road Commission. 

What are your future career goals?

My future career goals right now are to become CFO of Lapeer County. I also have my eyes on management. 

Which GFOA scholarship did you receive this year, and how will GFOA's scholarship help you achieve those goals?

I was one of two applicants to receive the $10,000 Frank L. Greathouse Scholarship. It will help me finish my current Master's Degree. With the scholarship, I plan on getting a Master's Degree in Public Administration. Not only does this scholarship help me reach my career goals, but I will graduate 100% debt free!
